vampires seem to be everywhere right now. twilight mania is out of control, topshop's advertisements with vampire themes fill the pages of magazines, true blood is blowing up, duwop is releasing lip venom v based on the twilight films... need i go on? i was thinking that this vampire fad couldn't possibly lead anywhere good, but then came jonathan saunders' spring 2010 RTW show. saunders' main inspiration came from the swedish vampire film Let The Right One In. The movie focuses on two young children who form a friendship-- one of them just happens to be a vampire.

The film itself is very minimalist, stark, quiet, slightly spooky, and somewhat airy. somehow saunders was able to communicate these feelings perfectly through the clothes seen in his new collection. the ethereal dresses with a certain roughness to them really channel the young female vampire character. The barren winter landscape of the film is brought to mind by the minimalist cuts and muted colors of the clothes with the darkness nodding to the underlying themes the film revolves around.
so thank you, jonathan saunders, for proving that sometimes vampires can be a little classy and for combining foreign art films with fashion-- what more could you want?
